"Self-Portrait as a Painter" is one of the earliest self-portraits by Vincent van Gogh. It was also the first time in which he portrayed himself as an artist. In this painting, Van Gogh is standing in front of a canvas, but he's not directly facing the canvas. He kind of faces the audience but he isn't. He's holding a palette on his right hand. Splotches of paint decorate the palette, with some brushes sticking out.
