Self-Portrait (1889) by Vincent van Gogh - Famous Art - Handmade Oil Painting on Canvas
Over the ten-year period of his career as an artist, Van Gogh painted over 40 self-portraits, mostly out of necessity because he couldn't afford to hire a model. This self-portrait, painted in 1889, shortly before he left Saint-Remy, is considered to be one of his last. It features Van Gogh with a stern look, a gaunt face and a beard. The brushstrokes are rough and the dissolving colours are turbulent, which may be subconsciously what Van Gogh was trying to depict: a man trying to take control even if he's under extreme physical, emotional and mental pressure.
