The subject is Dr. Gachet, a homeopathic doctor and an artist who took care of Van Gogh during the final months of his tragic life. Van Gogh befriended and stayed with Dr. Gachet after he left the asylum at Saint-Remy. During his stay there, he painted over 70 paintings, some of which are portraits of Dr. Gachet. But this version is the most popular and highly praised. It features Dr. Gachet resting his head on his right hand. Van Gogh himself described the portrait, in his letter to his sister, as a depiction of Dr. Gachet with a melancholy expression: sad but gentle, yet clear and intelligent.
