When Van Gogh was confined at the asylum in Saint-Remy, he drew strength from the view of the olive garden just outside his window. This is what made him paint the "Olive Trees with Yellow Sky and Sun," which was partly his response to Emile Bernard's painting of the Christ in the Garden of Olives (described by the latter in his letter to Van Gogh). But Van Gogh's suffering was not imaginary nor the same that of Christ. This painting features the olive trees undulating under the yellow sun. The whole painting is painted in the same intense brushstroke that seemed to have a life of its own, moving, dancing, undulating.
