Van Gogh painted at least 15 paintings about the olive garden found outside his window in Saint-Remy. He made these during his confinement in an asylum there. He lived there for a year from May 1889 to May 1890, at his own request. Painted during a time of heavy emotional turmoil and illness, this painting is done in a cool, calm hues of green and blue. The olive trees, the sky, the clouds and the ground seem to dance. It's a true testament of one man's relationship with nature, and how nature helped the artist with his inner struggles.
