"Cypresses" is one of the two vertical close-up paintings of the tall trees. Van Gogh painted this shortly before he went to Saint-Remy asylum in late 1889. The artist himself described the cypress as beautiful like an Egyptian obelisk. The view is a sun-view landscape, which gives contrast to the dark and looming close-up of the massive tree. The tree itself looks like a dark green fire rising from the grasses.
