"Young Girls with a Flowered Hat" is a painting by Russian expressionist artist Alexej von Jawlensky. Although he started painting while he was in Russia, the artist became famous when he moved to Germany where he stayed active throughout his life and career. He was more associated with the German artists than the Russian group. A key member of the Der Blaue Reiter, the Die Blaue Vier and the New Munich Artist's Association, Jawlensky was famous for his brand of expressionism, characterized by rich and lush colours comparable to Matisse's Fauvism. An example of this rich-coloured expressionist artwork is the painting featured here. It's a portrait of a girl wearing a flowered hat and holding a fan. The background, the dress and the hat are done in the same hue of red. Influence of the Japonism movement is also apparent in the painting.
