Konstantin Savitsky was a Russian realist painter who became a member of the Imperial Academy of Arts in 1897. He made many paintings depicting the lives of the working class. "To War" is a massive painting that took 10 years to complete. Inspired by the events of the Russo-Turkish War, this painting remains today as one of the best and most monumental works of the artist. The painting depicts families bidding goodbye to their loved ones, soldiers who are on their way to war abord a troop train. The artist intentionally did not put a central figure in the painting. Instead, he created a group of people each with stories to tell, saying their farewell to relatives and loved ones. It's a picture of national sorrow and hopelessness, a spectrum of emotions, of psychological tension and emotional tension. Truly, it's a complex, multi-figured masterpiece.
