Isaac Levitan was a Russian classical landscape painter most known for developing "mood landscapes." The most famous mood landscape and the artist's well-known painting is "The Vladimirka." The subject is the Vladimirka, also known as the Vladimir highway, which is a road leading east from Moscow. This road is socially, politically and historically significant. It had witnessed a lot of social and political changes in Russia. Thousands of prisoners in shackles had marched this road countless times. Isac Levitan's depiction of the road is this: a "lonely track going on into the empty distance enlivened only by a church and the vast lowering sky." With this, the road takes on a deeper, symbolic meaning.
