The Russian painter Valentin Serov takes his spin at the Rape of Europa, a popular subject in the history of art. It depicts the Greek mythology story of Europa, the daughter of King Agenor. It features the scene where Zeus, turned into a bull, came to abduct the beautiful Europa. Serov’s version features the bull rushing forward, with its head involuntarily turned backwards. The style is balances the academic with the archaic, as this was inspired by the frescoes paintings and Creto-Mycenean monuments which the artist saw during his trip to Greece.
