Festive colours, pudgy and ruddy women are characteristics of a painting by Boris Kustodiev, who was one of the important Russian and Soviet painters and stage designers. As an artist, he went against the convention of nude painting, by intentionally using ruddy and plus-size women as a model. "The Beauty" is a fine example of this. Modelled after the theatre artist Falina Shevchenko, the woman in the painting is sitting on a vivid and colourful bed inside a widely decorated room with flower-designed wallpaper. She is poised confidently, proud of her figure and beauty. With a painting such as this, the Kustodiev sent a clear message that beauty cannot be "boxed" since it comes in many forms.
