Andrei Ryabushkin was different from his contemporaries in the sense that he did not focus on dramatic historical figures and scenes in Russia. This was the main reason why he was not widely accepted by the State. However, this did not stop the artist from pursuing his craft, from developing his style. Unlike his contemporaries, his paintings don't depict the subjects in action or social conflicts. He just painted 17th-century Russian peasants and ordinary people in their everyday life. An example of this is "Tea-Drinking." In this painting, a group of men lined on a table, drinking tea. Some other peasants are just standing in the background. The subjects intentionally sit and stand frozen for the canvas, disregarding the idea of movement.
