Sadko is a character in the East Slavic epic called "Bylina." In the story, Sadko is an adventurer, a merchant and a gusli (the oldest East Slavic multi-string musical instrument) player. With the help of the Sea Tsar, Sadko became a rich merchant. But Sadko did not give proper respect to the Sea Tsar, which made the Sea Tsar angry. The Sea Tsar stopped Sadko's ships in the sea. To appease the Tsar, the crew threw Sadko into the sea. While underwater, Sadko played a piece of beautiful and haunting gusli music for the Sea Tsar. This appeased the Tsar, and he gave a new bride to Sadko in return. This tale has been retold countless times by various authors and became the inspiration for many arts. But the most famous and magical retelling of this tale is a painting by Ilya Repin, "Sadko in the Underwater Kingdom."
