Vasily Vereshchagin was both a soldier and artist. His experiences as member of the Russian army enriched his art and view of war in general. In his works, the artist showed the real side of war: the kind where there are no victors. “Mortally Wounded” is among such paintings. It features a wounded man who is about to fall to the ground, running for his dear life. This is the artist’s commentary on war, where men are not heroes, but merely human sacrifices, dying and suffering for nothing but the pleasures of the leaders and the conquerors. This just shows how disappointed the artist is with war and for having been a soldier, a title he was never proud of.
