There Comes Papa 1893 By Raja Ravi Varma - Famous Indian Art – Handmade oil painting on canvas
There Comes Papa, 1893 by Raja Ravi Varma is a portrait of Mahaprabha Thampuratti of Mavelikkara (the artist's daughter) holding her son Marthanda Varma against her hip. She is well dressed in a traditional white Indian sari, with headpiece. She is standing on a carpet whilst her dog, sitting at her feet, looks out. Positioned behind her is a chair with red fabric draped over it. She glances down at her child whilst gesturing with her hand to the arrival of Papa, who is out of frame. The artist, Raja Ravi Varma (1848 - 1906), was born into an aristocratic family of Kerala. He taught himself the intricacies of oil painting and the practices of European naturalism. He is famous for his paintings based on Indian mythology and epics.
