The Parsee Girl 1887 By Pestonji Bomanji - Famous Indian Art - Handmade oil painting on canvas
Pestonji Bomanji from Bombay was a professional portraitist who primarily painted members of his own Parsi community. As such Bomanji’s work often serves as an ethnographic study of Parsi customs and practices. The Parsee Girl, 1887 is a closely observed study of his daughter, whom he captured doodling onto one of his paintings. We see a small girl standing in a luxurious room; she is wearing a traditional Parsee sari. She makes eye contact with the artist whilst pointing towards a doodle she has painted over her father’s artwork. In her other hand she holds a paintbrush and a ribbon which is attached to a toy cart on the floor. The Parsee Girl, 1887 was exhibited at the Bombay Art Society in 1887.
