Sri Rama Conquers Varuna is a contemporary visual retelling of a particular scene in the Hindu epic Ramayana. In the story, the Hindu god Rama, who is the seventh avatar of Vishnu, is about to cross the raging ocean to Lanka just to save his wife Sita from the hands of the demon king Ravana. Varuna, the god of Lord of the ocean, appears above the waves to warn Rama that he cannot conquer nature and reminds him that he's the soul of peace and love. This is depicted in the painting, where Rama stands on the edge of a rock beside the sea, holding a bow and arrow, but his stance is not aggressive.
