The 7th and 8th fresco-like cave paintings at Ajanta in South India are the perfect examples of classic Indian art. When Amrita Sher-Gil visited Ajanta in 1936-37, she was fascinated about the cave paintings and was inspired to painting scenes of the region. The result is the painting, "South Indian Villagers Going to Market." This painting features a group of villagers walking. Compared to her more static depictions of her subject, this one emphasizes movement and colour.
