Shuja ud-Daula Nawab of Awadh By Mihr Chand - Famous Indian Art - Handmade oil painting on canvas
Mihr Chand was the great eighteenth-century master from Awadh. This portrait is a depiction of the powerful Nawab of Avadh, Shuja ud-Daulah who ruled from 1754-1775. He is the ruler to whom the Mughal heir Shah Alam turned for refuge during the clash of the Marathas and the Afghans in Delhi. During the Nawabs twenty-year reign, he attracted painters and men of letters to his court, including western painters. In this full length portrait, he is dressed in a flowing white garment with green jacket and green hat. One hand is placed on a dagger, the other on a sword. He is standing on a decorative red and gold carpet.
