Bichitr was an Indian painter during the Mughal period. He served as a court painter under the regime of Jahangir and Shah Jahan, and they have become his patrons. Like the other works during that period, his paintings are colourful, elaborate and ornamental, and the subjects mostly depict royal families, life at court, and important celebrations. His most famous work is "Shah Jahan Receives His Three Sons and Asaf Khan During His Accession Ceremonies." The painting is divided in three parts, each symbolizing and depicting each of the three sons. The crowd of people, the intricate details and the colours used perfectly capture the festive mood of the celebration.
