Raja Ravi Varma, often considered the father of modern Indian art and was declared a national treasure by the Indian government in 1979. Born in Kerala in 1848, he drew inspiration from old European master paintings and fused Western techniques with traditional Eastern sensibilities. In this portrait painting titled "Reverie" we see a traditionally dressed Keralite lady wearing a sheer white robe with gold borders. One hand her rests on her hip. She glances upwards and appears to be daydreaming and in a state of pleasant contemplation.
