It features a woman in black against a black backdrop. She appears to be one with the background, with just some fine lines separating her from the backdrop. By doing this, the artist diverts our attention directly to the face of the subject and the emotion that it portrays. The course and seemingly hurried brushwork add more emotional weight and dramatic effect to the portrait.
