Portrait of a Lady 1893 By Raja Ravi Varma - Famous Indian Art - Handmade oil painting on canvas
Raja Ravi Varma, born to an aristocratic family in Kerala, 1948 is often considered to be the father of modern Indian art. He drew inspiration from old European master paintings and fused Western techniques with traditional Eastern sensibilities. His 'Portrait of a Lady' was painted in 1893 and features an aristocratic woman, in traditional dress, sitting on a red velvet covered chair. Her gold edged, silken sari is gently draped over her shoulder. Her clothes and many ornate jewels indicate she is the matriarch of an affluent India family.
