Maharani Lakshmi Bayi 1883 By Raja Ravi Varma - Famous Indian Art - Handmade oil painting on canvas
Maharani Lakshmi Bayi, 1883 by Raja Ravi Varma is a portrait of Maharani Bharani Thirunal Lakshmi Lagi (1848-1901) who was the senior Rani of Travancore from 1857 until her death in 1901. Her mother's family was a branch of the Kolathunad Royal Family, directly related to the Travancore Royal Family. The noble lady is dressed in a refined red and gold sari, with a regal brooch pinned to her velvet bodice. She is bejeweled, wearing several pearl necklaces around her neck and large diamond and ruby earrings on her earlobes. She rests her hand on a book titled "The Young Lady's Book." which is positioned on an ornate marble table beside her. Two other books are seen, one being "Near Home, Or, The Countries of Europe Described." She is framed by a luxurious velvet curtain which hangs behind her. The portrait was painted in her reception room at the palace. In the distance we see concrete pillars and blue skies.
