Jatayu Attacks Ravana to Save Sita and Shatters his Chariot early 18C By Unkown - Famous Indian Art - Handmade oil painting on canvas
This painting is based on a fable and depicts the combat between King Ravana and Jatayau, the king of Eagles. The battle ensues when King Ravana of Lanka is abducting Sita the wife of prince Rama of Ayodha who is living in exile in a forest. Hearing Sita’s cries for help, Jatayu (The King of Eagles) attempts to protect her. Jatayu first tries to appeal to King Ravana’s sense of duty and righteousness, asking him to refrain from such a deplorable act. When Ravana refuses combat between the two ensues. Jatayu attacks Ravana with his claws, wings and beak inflicting many wounds on his body. He shatters Ravana's bows, arrows, and chariot, kills the mules of the chariot and plucks off the head of the charioteer with his beak. A furious Ravana severs Jatayu’s wings, feet, and sides, leaving the valiant Jatayu to die in pain. Although Jatayu is eventually defeated and killed by Ravana, the sympathies of the painter are clearly with the courageous bird, who is portrayed as an enormous figure dominating the picture frame. King Ravana is portrayed on a much smaller scale with several heads, whilst a diminuative Sita looks on with a hand gesture over her mouth.
