Girl with a Vase 1924 By António Xavier Trindade - Famous Indian Art - Handmade oil painting on canvas
António Xavier Trindade was born in Sanguem, Goa in 1870. He was an important painter of the Bombay School in the early 20th century. In 1920 The Bombay Art Society honoured him with its gold medal, the highest award in India for artists at that time. The painting, Girl with a Vase, 1924 is one of many examples which showcase Trindade's style i.e. use of western painting techniques to represent inherently Indian subject matter. We see a young Indian woman sitting on a chair with her head looking down towards an ornate vase which she holds in her hands. She appears to be lost in her own thoughts, She is wearing a traditional white sari and bodice, a hair veil, and is bejeweled with a necklace, nose piercing and arm bracelet. The overall mood is one of observation and introspection.
