Chand Bibi Hawking India Deccan 18th C By Deccan School - Famous Indian Art - Handmade oil painting on canvas
Chand Bibi was a legendary Queen of Ahmadnagar in the Deccan, who valiantly defended her fortress against the Mughal army in the sixteenth century. Her image became a popular subject in Deccani painting, and she is frequently depicted hawking, as is evident in this work. Here she rides a white and black horse through the green landsape with a hawk on her gloved right hand, accompanied by a dog. We see two birds flying ahead of her whist the background is filled with scenes of a castle and its environs.
