Abanindranath Tagore was the principal artist and creator of the “Indian Society of Oriental Art”. He was also the first major exponent of Swadeshi values in Indian art. In his1914 painting titled 'The Bodhisattva’s Tusks’, Abanindronath Tagore shows us a meditating prince who has draped his flowing locks of hair over the ivory tusks of an elephant. In Buddhism, a bodhisattva is a person who is on the path towards bodhi ('awakening') or Buddhahood. He is also a person who is able to reach nirvana but delays doing so through compassion for suffering beings.
