Battle of Rival Ascetics Akbarnama ca. 1590 By Basawan - Famous Indian Art - Handmade oil painting on canvas

from $555.00

Basāwan was an Indian miniature painter in the Mughal style. He was a court painter and the main figure of Mogul miniature painting during the reign of Akbar (1556-1605). Indian miniatures are small scale, highly detailed paintings. They trace back to at least the 9th century and are an Indian tradition with many contemporary artists still pursuing this type of art form.

This masterwork by Basawan is titled "Battle of Rival Ascetics, Akbarnama, 1590". It depicts the Mughal Army, commanded by Akbar attacking members of the Sannyasa, during the Battle of Thanesar. Read from top to bottom, the composition is a dramatic crescendo that begins with a calm, exotic landscape showing Thanesar’s architecture and its environs. It then features the most important person in the composition - the emperor himself- who accompanied by his entourage and a pair of elephants. The narrative ends with the depiction of the battle as seen in the lower half of the work, reaching its climax in the scenes in which several men are killed by the enemy’s swords.Basāwan was an Indian miniature painter in the Mughal style.
