Shaikh Muhammad Amir of Karraya was an Indian painter whose works were commissioned by the East India Company. Like the other company paintings in 19th century India, this painting features a visual record of an East India Company officer's life. Here, the central figure is a syce or groom, who is symmetrically flanked by two horses. The painting is depicted with naturalism. The result is at once dignified and poetic.
