The Women of Amphissa by Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema - Famous Art - Handmade Oil Painting on Canvas
Plutarch, a Greek historian, recorded an ancient event where the followers of the god of wine, Bacchus, have wandered away from their home in Phocis and woken up in the land of Amphissa whom they are at war with. But instead of being held captive, the men are graciously welcomed by the women of Amphissa. The beautiful women offer their sensual dancing, their bacchantes nourishment and their protection. This is beautifully illustrated by Lawrence Alma-Tadema in his painting.
