The Starry Night by Vincent van Gogh- Famous Art - Handmade Oil Painting on Canvas
Sleepless nights result in one of Van Gogh's most critically acclaimed pieces. One night, while looking through the barred window of the asylum which he had admitted himself to, Van Gogh was captivated by the night once more. He claimed it more alive than day, and spent three nights whirling 'Starry Night' into being. A quiet town slumbers beneath the night sky, as Van Gogh brings the moon to the brightness of the sun, and the stars to their glory. With an air of constant movement, the viewer sways with the waving, swirling sky, and dancing, almost tortured cypress. Hills roll into the small town which houses many. The church with it's bell-tower is reminiscent of his parent's place in Nuenen where his father was posted as pastor. As the night sky is lit and alive, notice that the light from the moon and stars do not diffuse onto the rooftops of the building below, but remain in the wave of nighttime. Van Gogh secluded the light to the two thirds of the upper canvas, and with his thick, rich brushstrokes enabled more depth into the passing sky. Starry Night is one of hope, that though the night is dark, therein lies great beauty.
