The Rokeby Venus by Diego Velázquez - Famous Art - Handmade Oil Painting on Canvas
Nude paintings were rare in Spanish art during the 17th century, mainly due to the Spanish Inquisition. Despite this, the leading artist of the Spanish Golden Age Diego Velazquez was able to paint and release several nudes. Unfortunately, only The Rokeby Venus survived. Even this became a subject of an attack by 1914. The painting features the goddess Venus from a back view, which follows the traditional and antique portrayal of said god. However, she is shown without any literary or mythological motif. Instead, she is featured like an ordinary beautiful woman lying on a bed, in a sensual pose, looking into the mirror. Her son Cupid is holding the mirror in a mischievous way. This painting remains as one of the most important works of the artist.
