The Papal Palace is an important historical palace located in Avignon, France. This medieval Gothic structure served as a fortress and a crucial seat of Western Christianity during the 14th century. Aside from this, the structure has been popularly depicted in art throughout the centuries. Perhaps the most popular painting on the palace is the one by Paul Signac. In the painting, the palace is painted from a distance, capturing it in its full view including the bridge, the water, its reflection on it and the sky behind it.  The fine pointy brushstrokes and the similar tones and colors used in the subject and the background make it appear that the palace is one with the background. It highlights Signac’s venture into Pointillism.
