The Mother and Sister of the Artist by Berthe Morisot - Famous Art - Handmade Oil Painting on Canvas
Berthe Morisot painted intimate portraits of her family. One of the most intimate and domestic scene that the artist has painted was the piece entitled The Mother and Sister of the Artist. The painting documented the time when the artist’s sister Edma Pontillon stayed with her family sometime in 1869 to 1870 while awaiting the birth of her first child. As suggested by the loose robe that she’s wearing, she is pregnant. With her is the artist’s mother who is intently reading a book. There is a contrast of light and dark tones between the sister and the mother; the sister wearing white, sitting on a floral upholstery, while the mother is all in black.
