One of the best known genre paintings by Jan Vermeer is The Love Letter. It makes use of a curtains as a device, which is common among Dutch paintings during those times, to make way for the main subject or central figures of the painting. With the use of a tied-up curtain, it appears that the audience are peeping and viewing at something which they are not supposed to see, like an eavesdropper or a stalker looking at an intimate and personal scene, which in this case, is a servant handing a letter, maybe from a secret lover, to a young woman holding a cittern. This painting is currently displayed at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam.
