George Inness was asked by a corporate patron to document the industrial achievements of the Lackawanna Railroad. But rather than highlighting the railroad, Inness poignantly contrasted the onset of industrialization with the now spoiled beauty of nature. Viewed from afar, the artist captured the expanse of the Lackawanna Valleys beauty, reminding every audience about the virgin beauty of the countryside and at the same time posing a dilemma to what would be the outcome of the widespread of technology and modernity. The Lackawanna Valley is not a homage to the railroad. It’s a lament of the ephemeral American dream.
