The Gross Clinic by Thomas Eakins is considered by many art historians as one of the best American paintings of all time. It is often praised for its uncompromising realism, documenting a medical procedure as it is, without sanitizing it for the art audience. It is based on an actual surgery by Dr. Samuel D. Gross who operated a young man for osteomyelitis as part of a lecture series conducted for a group of medical students at Jefferson Medical College. With the use of lighting, Eakins focused on Dr. Gross and the medical students while they perform the surgery. This scene is portrayed with stark realism. In the background are the audiences who are painted out of focus. However, among those in the audience is Eakins himself who appears to be writing or drawing on a table. He is painted more detailed than the other people in the audience.
