The Four Apostles was one of the last major works of the German Renaissance artist Albrecht Durer. Finished in 1526, this painting depicts the apostles as larger-than-life subjects. The left panel is occupied by John and Peter, while the right panel is peopled with Paul and Mark. By using traditional Bible symbols, Durer perfectly captured the Apostles as they have often been depicted. Open book for John, keys for Peter, scroll for Mark, and sword and closed book for Paul. There are also inscriptions from the Bible found at the bottom of the panels.
