Atala is an interesting character, the heroine of the 1801 novel of Chateurbriand. In the novel, Atala was torn between her love for the Indian Chactas and her faith in God and her decision to remain a virgin. This conflict is what prompted her to commit suicide. This death is beautifully captured in the painting by Anne-Louis Girodet de Roussy-Trioson, The Entombment of Atala. In the painting, Atala’s corpse is half-caste in a cave, lighted from the left by the rays of the sunset. Even in death, Atala is torn between love and religion, between faith and lust, between sanctity and desire. This is best symbolized by the sensual position of Atala and the crufix she clutches, as well as the presence of her lover and a religious figure, Father Aubry. Such a masterpiece.
