The Barque of Dante was considered as the first major work by Eugene Delacroix. The discipline used by the artist is that of the Neo-Classicist, but there are already signs that lead towards the Romantic movement. This painting is loosely based from Dante’s Inferno. The setting is the City of the dead. In this work of art, Dante and Virgil are crossing the rough waters of the River Styx among the tormented souls. The water is harsh and rash; and the background is dark, as though they are in hell.
