At first glance, the portrait looks like that of the traditional portrayals of Christ. The use of dark tones, symmetry and frontal view make it even more like conventional religious portraits than a self-portrait. There are also inscriptions at the back and the subject himself appears to be floating in space, without time, without limits. His look is confrontational and there is a sense of mystery in his posture, like he is mimicking Christ in some ways. No wonder why this image has become fixed in popular imagination.
