Childe Hassam, unlike his American contemporaries who painted subjects of the past, preferred painting immediate objects like the Impressionist. While he was not formally trained like the French Impressionists, his works reflected the same sensibility and tone as theirs. He captured contemporary American scenes, particularly structures and people in New York. Many of his woks featured the Fifth Avenue as the subject. In this painting, Rainy Day on Fifth Avenue, Hassam perfectly captured the people parading the street under a bad weather. The people seem to dissolve into the background, making them blurry as the street and everything else in the painting, experimenting with colors to best record what a rainy day looks and feels like.
