Portrait of Madame X is a painting by John Singer Sargent. The subject of the painting is Virginie Amelle Avegno Gautreau, a young socialite and the wife of Pierre Gautreau, a French banker. The portrait shows the main subject posing elegantly facing sideways. She is wearing a black satin dress which perfectly contrasts the woman’s pale flesh tone. She sort of shines among the dark-colored background. Although the painting caused a scandal in Paris when it was first exhibited, it later revived Sargent’s career in America and Britain. Today, it is considered as one of the most striking portraits made by the artist.
