Olympia by Edouard Manet - Famous Art - Handmade Oil Painting on Canvas
Olympia is a painting by Edouard Manet which was first exhibited in 1965 at the Paris Salon. The subject is a nude woman lying on a bed, she is being brought flowers by a fully clothed servant. While nudity was a common subject in art, this particular painting both shocked and amused the audiences of that time. The center of controversy was not the nudity but the confrontational gaze given by the nude woman and the symbols in the painting that suggest that she is a prostitute, considering that the name Olympia was commonly associated with prostitutes in Paris at the time. Nevertheless, the painting remained as one of the memorable works of the French master painter.
