Las Meninas by Diego Velazquez- Famous Art - Handmade Oil Painting on Canvas
Diego Velazquez proved himself to be the leading painter in the Spanish Golden Age of art in this 1656 masterpiece. Las Meninas features snapshots of people including the artist himself. Other than the artist, who is depicted in front of a huge canvas, looking at the other subjects in the photo; the other people seemed like an illusion, like dolls, mere subjects rather than real human beings. The center of attraction among the subjects is the young Infanta Margaret Theresa, who is surrounded by her entourage. The composition and the relationship between the subjects in the painting raise a question on reality and illusion, on the uncertainty of the viewer and the “being viewed.” No wonder why this remains to be one of the widely analyzed works up to this day.
