Bathers at Asnieres was the first major large canvas painting by Georges Seurat who was merely 24 years old when he finished this in 1884. Although the use of light tone and color was clearly influenced by Impressionism, Seurat in this painting already showed signs that he was moving towards Pointillism and Neo-Impressionism. This was emphasized by his carefully outlined sculptural figures and simplified textures. The scene is at the River Seine where young men are relaxing on the riverbank and some are bathing in the river. The sculpturally-depicted figures are contrasted by the Impressionistic riverside, trees, walls and buildings. The use of light colors creates a gentle vibrancy and makes this painting simply timeless.
