A Cotton Office in New Orleans was the first painting by then unrecognized artist Edgar Degas sold to a museum, although it was initially intended for a British textile manufacturer. This marked the shift of the artist’s life from a struggling artist to a financially stable, recognized French master. It features a scene at a cotton office, which is owned by Degas’ uncle. In the painting, the uncle is examining a raw cotton, while others in the family, particularly Degas’ brother, are doing other things.
