Paul Gauguin's philosophy, subject and work as an artist was heavy influenced by Tahitians and Polynesians. "The Day of the God" is the artist's study and interpretation of Polynesian mythology. The central figure of the painting is Taaroa, the creator of the world in Maori tradition. There are women in the background; some are dancing a ritual, and others simply go about their work. On the foreground, a nude woman fixes her hair and two others are lying curled on the pink sand. The heavy use of bright colours and geometric shapes stylized the whole picture, giving it a dreamy effect.
