Jean-Leon Gerome put to canvas the tale of Pygmalion and Galatea as recounted in Ovid's book, Metamorphoses. The painting depicts the scene where Pygmalion's sculpture, Galatea, comes to life and they passionately kiss each other. It was the goddess Venus who brought the statue to life, in fulfilment of Pymalion's wish to have a wife as beautiful as Galatea.
